Gold Coast Fishing Opportunities are Nearly Limitless

If you are visiting without your own equipment, Gold Coast fishing charter boats are ready and waiting to take you and your crew out for a day or a few hours of pleasure. If you’ve got your own boat and some fishing rods, you can take off on your own.

There are at least a dozen places to cast off from, right in the heart of Australia’s tourist capital. Here’s a look at where you can go and what you can do.

Probably the nicest thing about Gold Coast fishing charter services is that everything is included. There is no need to bring your own fishing rods, tackle, bait or even your own sunscreen.

Of course, the items included and the services provided vary from one company to the other. Some of the boats are family owned and operated, which helps the companies to keep their overhead down and your per person price lower.

You can expect to pay $80 or more per person. Rates are usually higher on holidays and weekends. Large groups get the best per person rates. If you have a big family or an office crew, you can have the whole boat to yourself.

When you are choosing a charter company, look at the kind of fishing rods they provide. It could tell you a lot. A Penn or Shimano rod will allow you to land mackerel, mahi mahi, Wahoo, tuna or even marlin.

An experienced captain and crew can have a beginner, with no experience, ready to catch the big one in the time that it takes to get to the first reef. In many cases, that’s about 10 minutes.

If you want to be your own captain, you can rent Gold Coast fishing boats or bring your own. There are public docks for small boats at Paradise Point, Broadwater, Labrador, Main Beach, Burleigh Heads, Palm Beach, Tweed Heads and Currumbin.

There are many other locations for setting out, too. Those are among the most popular and the best equipped. You’ll want to be sure that you have deep sea or ocean fishing rods, plenty of extra fishing line, lots of bait and a cooler or two.

Queensland does not require a recreational license for catch and release or for catch and keep. The catch and keep policies on Gold Coast fishing charters vary, but the better companies provide onboard cleaning, gutting and bagging. Only endangered species must be released, in good shape, after a catch.

If you are inexperienced or unsure about motion sickness, you will want to bring along some motion sickness tablets. Check with the charter company for recommendations. Some say that the ginger tablets are ineffective.

You can bring your own fishing rods on most charters, as long as the quality is good enough for deep sea or reef fish. It is not unusual to see sharks and large sailfish. So, be prepared and bring your camera.

The trip might last for only half a day. But, people say that their memories of Gold Coast fishing last a lifetime.
